Throughout the world, courageous democracy defenders struggle for freedom. They are journalists, activists, and faith and political leaders waging nonviolent resistance against autocrats who oppress them. They seek the right to speak, elect their leaders, worship, run for office, and live their lives in peace. They seek the freedom that many of us living in democracies experience – even take for granted – every day. They seek to secure a better future for themselves and the people in their nation.
Their work has cost them their security, freedom, and livelihoods – and even their lives. Many have been unjustly imprisoned, faced torture and abuse, experienced online and physical threats, and worse. The families of these activists are also often targets for attacks. Despite this repression, these courageous democracy defenders continue their selfless struggle.
They are working for a future defined by freedom, liberty, and justice for all people.
