Happy Back to School season! As a former teacher, I always looked forward to meet the teacher night and getting to hear all about my new students from those who know them best.
Establishing a relationship with your child’s teacher is an important first step in the school year.
Like you, teachers are invested in making sure your child succeeds, so share anything that will help the teacher understand and connect with your child, such as their strengths and interests, what motivates them, or what might cause frustration. Conversations like these will help keep an open line of communication, so you can stay informed and address any challenges early if your child begins to struggle.
Also, ask how you can support your child’s learning at home. With younger children, you may be able to directly reinforce what they are learning in the classroom. With older children, support might look more like helping them establish routines, encouraging organization and independence, and reinforcing the habits that will help them be successful at school.
We wish you and your family a great school year! For more information on our work, visit bushcenter.org.
