The President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), housed within the U.S. Department of State, coordinates a whole-of-government approach to U.S. investments that have turned the tide of the global HIV/AIDS crisis.
PEPFAR is a historic success story:
PEPFAR established a new paradigm in global health by partnering with faith-based organizations, NGOs, local partners, and the federal government, and is increasingly implemented by on-the-ground organizations.
The healthcare systems built by PEPFAR, including laboratories, 340,000 trained health workers, networks of clinics and hospitals, and data reporting systems, quickly transitioned to respond to emerging diseases including COVID-19 and Ebola.
The program has been reauthorized by overwhelming bipartisan majorities in the House and Senate and supported by presidents of both parties, delivering consistent impact and a consistent budget despite flat funding since 2009.
