Since its historic election in 2015, Burma’s road to democracy has been difficult and disappointing. The country continues to face significant challenges including deeply troubling human rights issues. Burma’s lasting peace and successful democratic transition are still achievable but require greater partnership between Burma’s people and the international community. The country’s next election should be closely watched and fully supported by other democracies, especially the United States, which has traditionally recognized advancing freedom and democracy as a pillar of its foreign policy.
