Interviews with Chen Guangcheng

Interviewed May 17, 2024

Even though China doesn’t grant freedom of expression to its people, the people are starting to realize they need to have freedom of expression such as freedom of speech and freedom of the press. So with the Internet, even though the Chinese Communists want to control such communication mediums, many in China, through “wall jumping” [using a proxy to bypass the “Great Firewall” – the Chinese government’s comprehensive Internet censorship technology], can express themselves freely. However, this is still incomplete.

For people in China fully enjoying freedom of expression we have to [completely] overcome the “Internet Berlin Wall” [The Great Firewall] in which China has invested heavily. As soon as the “Internet Berlin Wall” is taken down then I would say a democratic China is near. What the Chinese communists have invested monetarily for the purpose of controlling the Internet is very scary, and beyond anyone’s imagination.

They have repeatedly said that all the press should serve as the “voice of the party” and this means the people have no “voice” of expression on their behalf. So the creation of the Internet has given the people their “voice” and ability to speak.

Therefore, the Chinese communists attempt to control their ability to speak has been rendered ineffective but the communists also don’t want outsiders to realize that they are controlling freedom of expression, so they have tried everything they could to get this done.

In 2008 the Chinese communists actually floated an idea that they wanted to install a “backdoor” on every individual personal computer. This way if there were any words or phrases that they don’t want the people to see, this software would block the websites. Of course they pulled away from this idea when mass protests happened, but even so, the [resources] they have invested in attempts to try and control the Internet is unimaginable.

Recently in Shanghai there was an Internet attack from the Chinese military from a particular office building, which made many people realize the extent of Internet censorship [the Chinese military maintains an office building on the outskirts of Shanghai believed to be linked with the development of computer hacking technology: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/19/technology/chinas-army-is-seen-as-tied-to-hacking-against-us.html?pagewanted=all ]

So this should serve as a wake-up call for us. If we can solve the problem of Internet censorship in China we can solve most of the issues of freedom of speech in China.

All dictators have a similarity in that they use lies, propaganda and violence to sustain their rule. So, as soon as the “Internet Berlin Wall” is demolished, many people in China will immediately wake up and realize the truth, and the lies will no longer be effective.
