Gayle Tzemach Lemmon, author of three New York Times bestsellers, including The Daughters of Kobani: A Story of Rebellion, Courage, and Justice, headlines this year’s Laura Bush Book Club program. Published earlier this year, The Daughters of Kobani tells the story of an all-female militia that faced off against ISIS in the little known town of Kobani, Syria.
Tzemach Lemmon, who is also a national security expert and former journalist who has covered Afghanistan extensively, will discuss the book and also offer insights on the unfolding situation in Afghanistan. Her 2011 book, The Dressmaker of Khair Khana: Five Sisters, One Remarkable Family, and the Woman Who Risked Everything to Keep Them Safe, tells the story of a real–life heroine, a young entrepreneur whose business created jobs and hope for women in her neighborhood during the Taliban years. Roya Mahboob, a native of Afghanistan who is a pioneering tech leader, advocate, and member of the Presidential Leadership Scholars Class of 2019, will also contribute to what promises to be a timely and thought-provoking evening.
