Specialist José Santiago joined the United States Army in 1999 as a Combat Medic. For seven years, he served at Fort Carson in Colorado under the 2nd Squadron 3rd Armor Cavalry Regiment.
During his service, he deployed to Iraq from April 2003 - April 2004. Prior to his medical discharge in June 2006, he was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and later with a traumatic brain injury (TBI). In March 2010, Specialist Santiago’s cycling journey began. He testifies that it has been a tremendous help to his recovery and has improved his quality of life. He has biked more than 3,000 miles over the past three years through participation in events across the country with Ride 2 Recovery, the Wounded Warrior Project and Disabled Sports U.S.A.
Specialist Santiago’s personal goal is to continue cycling and to attend events as time permits. His mission is to create a cycling club in Colorado to assist injured veterans in their recovery process.
