Oscar de la Renta: Five Decades of Style

Exhibit

July 19, 2014 - October 5, 2014

ICONIC STYLE FOR FIRST LADIES

The exhibition offers visitors an opportunity to examine, through Oscar de la Renta’s designs, the unique role of the First Lady as our country’s official hostess to world leaders and diplomats and as a trendsetter in style, fashion, and entertaining. Daywear and evening dresses worn by Laura Bush, Hillary Clinton, and Nancy Reagan are on display, as well as garments worn by members of First Families, including Jenna Bush’s wedding dress.

Expressive Spanish Influence

The art, culture, and dress of Spain influenced Mr. de la Renta’s style – illustrated in the exhibit through his use of lace, color, and embellishment reminiscent of traditional Matador costumes.

The Craftmanship of Couture

Couture clothing, on display from Oscar de la Renta’s tenure at the French couture house Pierre Balmain, is made-to-order to a client’s exact measurements using the finest craftsmanship and materials.

Cultural Aesthetic From Around the Globe

This exhibit features silhouettes and embellishments that reflect countries including Russia, India, and Uzbekistan.

The Glamour of the Red Carpet

From such A-list events as the Oscars, the Country Music Awards, and the Met Gala, the exhibition features stunning evening gowns designed by Oscar de la Renta for America’s most acclaimed celebrities.

Inspired by the Garden

Mr. de la Renta, an avid lifelong gardener, uses floral themes throughout his work, from intricately embellished flower embroideries and appliques to bright botanical prints.

A Decorated Career

In 1967 and 1968, Mr. de la Renta won back-to-back Coty Awards, and he was also the recipient of the 1973 Coty Lifetime Achievement award. In 1968, he traveled to Dallas to receive the Neiman Marcus Award for Distinguished Service in the Field of Fashion.

I have always felt my role as a designer is to do the very best I can for a woman to make her look her best. Fashion is only fashion once a woman puts it on.
