Ten years ago, the United Nations Commission of Inquiry (COI) on the human rights situation in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea released its first report.

The COI was created to investigate “systemic, widespread, and grave violations of human rights” in North Korea. Its first report released in 2014 exposed the North Korean regime’s barbaric crimes against its own people – including arbitrary detention, torture, executions, and prison camps.

North Korean refugee Joseph Kim, who serves as Program Manager of Global Policy and Expert-in-Residence at the George W. Bush Institute, recently shared a message of hope for the future of North Korea to mark the 10th anniversary of the COI report.

“I’m hopeful that justice and freedom will prevail in North Korea, as long as we remain steadfast in our convictions and take action,” Joseph said.
