A glimpse into the Wildflower Meadow in the Laura W. Bush Native Texas Park

Standing in the Wildflower Meadow in the Laura W. Bush Native Texas Park, Master Naturalist and Bush Center volunteer Jay Przborski shows off the Wildflower Meadow’s most vibrant flower, the gaillardia (also known as the fire wheel or Indian blanket flower). This year, the park is especially vibrant; according to Jay, it is colorful in a way we’ve never seen before.

Better-than-normal weather conditions and the germination of fall reseeding have caused a larger variety of flowers native to Texas to bloom this year. In previous years, only the American basket flower would appear because of a dry fall and a late hard freeze.

If you haven’t been for a walk in the Laura W. Bush Native Texas Park, now is a perfect time to see the gaillardia, as well as other beautiful plants. Guided tours are available for free every Saturday at 10 a.m. through June 1. Weather permitting.
