Connecting With Care

The military ethos many veterans live by – service, honor, valor, and discipline can be a barrier when it comes to seeking care for traumatic brain injury (TBI) or post-traumatic stress (PTS). The Bush Institute Warrior Wellness Alliance was created so more veterans can access quality care for the invisible wounds.

The military ethos many veterans live by – service, honor, valor, and discipline can be a barrier when it comes to seeking care for traumatic brain injury (TBI) or post-traumatic stress (PTS). Over 80 percent of veterans and service members report feeling embarrassed, weak, and afraid of the negative impact on their careers.

Additionally, there is limited quality mental health care in this country. Only 13 percent of community based mental health providers are equipped to deliver culturally competent, evidence-based mental health care and support for brain health. And, traditionally peer-to-peer networks and the health care providers who serve veterans work in silos. The lack of communication can impact a veteran’s recovery.

For these reasons, the George W. Bush Institute created the Warrior Wellness Alliance which links peer-to-peer veteran networks to high quality clinical care organizations, so more veterans can access quality care for the invisible wounds when they need it.  This collaboration resides in these organizations working together to generate solutions and break down barriers.

The Warrior Wellness Alliance tackles the three biggest barriers to care – concerns about seeking help, navigating a confusing landscape, and limited mental health care. Personal, individualized care is at the heart of our mission. This is why our best-in-class network tool is built around human connection.

In partnership with the Wounded Warrior Project and  Combined Arms,  the Warrior Wellness Alliance launched a pilot program in the Houston, Colorado, and Central Florida that empowers veteran peer network leaders to help their veteran peers connect with the right care provider when they need it by leveraging technology from Combined Arms and a human advocate at the Wounded Warrior Project.
