On Thursday, October 19, the George W. Bush Institute hosted The Spirit of Liberty: At Home, In the World, a national forum in New York City focused on freedom, free markets, and security.

The event included remarks by President George W. Bush, remarks by Mrs. Laura Bush, as well as a conversation on American leadership with United States Secretary of State Madeleine K. Albright, United States Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, and United States Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

There was also be a panel discussion on domestic issues featuring: Jean Case, Chief Executive Officer, Case Foundation and Chairman of the National Geographic Society; Mel Martinez, Chairman of the Southeast & Latin America for JPMorgan Chase & Co., former United States Senator and former United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development; Wes Moore, CEO, Robin Hood Foundation; and Jeffrey Rosen, President and Chief Executive Officer, National Constitution Center.

The event brought together top business leaders, scholars, policymakers, and others to look practically and optimistically at the challenges democracy is facing here and around the world. The forum is part of an effort by the Bush Institute to affirm American values of freedom and free markets, strengthen the institutions that secure these values at home, and help create a new consensus that spreads them abroad.
