In early 2009, Joe’s unit is deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
Now a squad leader, Joe is almost relieved to be back as he finds a sense of purpose and team.
On a routine patrol, Joe’s Humvee is blown up by an IED, and he experiences a traumatic brain injury.
He is medically cleared and finishes his 12-month deployment.
Joe returns home in March 2010 and is demobilized at Fort Stewart, Georgia.
