Recommended Standards for Delivering High-Quality Care to Veterans with Invisible Wounds

The Veteran Wellness Alliance aims to connect veterans with high-quality mental and brain health care.

The Veteran Wellness Alliance aims to connect veterans with high-quality mental and brain health care. But what exactly makes it “high-quality,” and what are the standards clinical providers must meet to deliver “high-quality” care? The Alliance and researchers at RAND worked together to answer those questions in a set of reports.

The first, released in 2020, defined high-quality care. The authors identified what qualifies as high-quality care, they developed an initial definition, and made recommendations for implementing, refining, and disseminating the definition and its associated metrics.

Now, RAND researchers have created a list of standards for delivering high-quality care, which was published in a report this week sponsored by The Alliance, the Bob Woodruff Foundation, and the Wounded Warrior Project. The report outlines standards that will improve access and efficacy of care for the invisible wounds. Adoption of the recommendations will make it easier for veterans, policymakers, providers, and payers to identify good and poor care. The report also outlines a roadmap for those who may not meet the definition of high-quality care and need to invest in training and other resources.
