This weekend, Nigar, one the most senior female police officers in Afghanistan, was gunned down by a motorcycle gunman on her way to work, just months after her predecessor was also killed. She was 38 years old.

Every day, stories like this come out of Afghanistan that, as the article says, “highlight the dangers women in positions of authority face as the country prepares for the withdrawal of most Western troops next year.”  At the Bush Institute, we remain committed to the plight of Afghan women and girls and believe that we all have an obligation to attend to the gains women in Afghanistan have made in the past decade.
