Addressing women’s cancers: Smart public health and a moral imperative

August 13, 2012 by Doyin Oluwole

Management Sciences for Health (MSH) hosted a satellite session, Beyond MDG 6: HIV and Chronic NCDs: Integrating Health Systems Towards Universal Health Coverage on Sunday, July 22, 2012, at the XIX International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2012). MSH asked me to participate on the panel alongside a number of international health leaders (left to right in photo): Dr. Ayoub Magimba, Tanzania Ministry of Health, Dr. Till Bärnighausen, Harvard School of Public Health, Dr. Jemima Kamano, AMPATH, Mr. John Donnelly, GlobalPosts (moderator), Sir George Alleyne, United Nations Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in the Caribbean, me, and Dr. Jonathan D. Quick, Management Sciences for Health. The plenary session put a spotlight on the chronic diseases that remain an emerging threat to both HIV-positive and -negative populations. On the panel, I discussed how Pink Ribbon Red Ribbon is addressing breast and cervical cancer. For a more in depth discussion on this topic, watch the webcast of the panel (via Kaiser Family Foundation). View my segment beginning at the 52 minute mark to hear why investing in cancer prevention and treatment is not only smart public health, but a moral imperative. Doyin Oluwole, MD, FRCP, is the founding Executive Director of Pink Ribbon Red Ribbon, based at the George W. Bush Institute.
