Matthew M. Zbiec is from Chicago, Illinois and joined the United States Marine Corps immediately after high school graduation. After completing training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego, California he was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division in 29 Palms, California. Matthew was deployed twice to Iraq. During his second combat tour he served as Squad Leader for the 1st Squad, 1st Platoon, Golf Company, 2/7 in Fallujah, Iraq. In 2005, he was hit by a hand detonated Improvised Explosive Device and sustained a grade three concussion, perforation of both ear drums, Traumatic Brain Injury, amputation of both pinky digits, trauma and muscle loss in both legs, nerve damage, and shrapnel injuries to all of his extremities and face. After rehabilitation, he was assigned state side at Camp Pendleton, California until his medical retirement in 2007.
Matthew lives in La Mesa, California with his wife and two children. He and his wife are working to further their educations with a shared goal of one day providing assistance to our combat wounded servicemen and women.
