Matthew Costello is Senior Historian at the White House Historical Association. He received his Ph.D. and M.A. in American history at Marquette University. He has received research fellowships from Marquette University, the Virginia Historical Society, the United States Capitol Historical Society, and the Fred W. Smith National Library at Mount Vernon. He has written several articles and is publishing his first book, “The Property of the Nation: Democracy and the Memory of George Washington” with University Press of Kansas. He is currently working on another book project which explores the impact of the Theodore Roosevelt family on the White House—as a home, office, and stage—for successive first families.
