M. Lyla Kohistany served on active duty from 2001-2007 as a naval surface warfare and intelligence officer, deploying to Bagram in 2005. From 2008-2013, she consulted for the Defense Intelligence Agency and U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM). From 2013-2014, Kohistany deployed as the NATO Special Operations Component Command-Afghanistan’s cultural advisor. Kohistany currently consults for USSOCOM and the Cultural Intelligence Center. She is also president/co-founder of PROMOTE, a nonprofit focused on creating inclusive Special Operations teams. Kohistany holds a B.A. from Penn State University and an M.A. from Georgetown University.
