Press Release

China's influence and evolving relationships are explored in the Bush Institute's quarterly publication The Catalyst

Exclusive interview with House China Select Committee Chair Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-WI); Bush Institute to host webinar with leading China experts

Dallas, TX – The new Spring issue of The Catalyst: A Journal of Ideas from the Bush Institute explores how the Ukraine war, the COVID-19 pandemic, and President Xi Jinping’s consolidation of power have dramatically altered China’s domestic situation and foreign policy. In the issue, top experts from around the globe dissect the implications for China, the United States, and the rest of the democratic world, offering advice on how best to respond.

In an exclusive interview with Jonathan Tepperman, The Catalyst’s new Editor-in-Chief and former Editor-in-Chief of Foreign Policy, Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-WI) – Chair of Congress’s new Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party – discusses the flaws in the U.S. government’s current approach and how the United States can “selectively decouple” its economy from China’s.

A series of essays examine how recent events have shifted China’s foreign policy. Nury Turkel, Chair of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, details Beijing’s ongoing but often overlooked genocide against the Uyghurs and other Turkic Muslims. Jessica Ludwig and Chris Walsh, Bush Institute freedom and democracy experts, explore China’s malign influence on Americans’ everyday life, from watching the NBA to scrolling through TikTok.

On May 31, a virtual Engage at the Bush Center, presented by NexPoint conversation, will focus on China’s changing strategy and what it means for others. Open to the public, the discussion will include a live Q&A with two leading experts: Victor Cha, Senior Fellow at the Bush Institute and Senior Vice President for Asia and Korea Chair at the Center for Strategic and International Studies; and Yun Sun, Senior Fellow and Co-Director of the East Asia Program and Director of the China Program at the Stimson Center.
