Strengthening Our Democracy: April 2024
Hello, Friends.

At the George W. Bush Institute, we seek to emphasize the goodness of the American experiment. While it can be messy at times, democracy remains the best system for fostering a free, just, and prosperous society.

We joined fellow presidential foundations last fall to make this case through an unprecedented statement reaffirming our commitment to America’s democratic principles. And as many of you know, we’ve spent the past several months identifying how to best promote these beliefs, and we are now focused on three big ideas.

  1. Showcasing pluralism in action – Our Pluralism Challenge series and events model the healthy disagreement and civil discourse that is the bedrock to democracy. A commitment to pluralism – or broad social tolerance for people of various backgrounds and beliefs – gives our cherished liberties their potency and allows 330 million very different Americans to coexist peacefully.
  1. Developing the leaders our country needs – Effective democracy requires principled leadership to navigate our complex challenges. Our Presidential Leadership Scholars and the Stand-To Veterans Leadership Program help address this need.
  1. Highlighting and offering policy solutions to strengthen our democracy – We are focused on issues like confronting mis- and disinformation, supporting local media, and promoting civic education.

This newsletter will highlight all these things – from sharing the stories of Americans boldly practicing pluralism to spotlighting exciting ideas for improving the quality of our democracy.

We hope to make clear that patriotism requires us to expect disagreement with each other while we respect the democratic values that bind us. Doing both is how our shared American ideals become real.

This is the greatness of America. Thanks for reading.

Best,

Chris Walsh
Director of Global Policy, George W. Bush Institute

Figure of the month
Manu Meel

As the CEO of Bridge USA, a nonprofit that creates spaces on high school and college campuses for students to have open discussions about political issues, Manu knows the power of pluralism. In 2017, Manu was inspired to start a chapter of Bridge USA while a student at the University of California, Berkeley, after angry and violent protests erupted over a planned visit by a controversial speaker. Manu knew that there must be a better way for students to engage with charged and divisive topics. Today, Bridge USA describes itself as a multi-partisan movement that ensures the next generation leads with empathy and constructive engagement.

Learn more about Manu and his work from this episode of The Strategerist podcast and this article “How talking can build a bridge to a better America” from The Catalyst: A Journal of Ideas from the Bush Institute.

Bush Institute insights
  • The Bush Institute participated in an iftar dinner during the holy month of Ramadan. Bush Institute Executive Director David J. Kramer and I co-authored a piece, noting that the multifaith celebration exemplified America at its very best.
  • In case you missed it, the latest edition of The Catalyst on The State of American Democracy features an interview with President Bush, perspectives on trust and common solutions from Governors Laura Kelley and Glenn Youngkin, a great point/counterpoint on whether or not American institutions still work from scholars Jay Cost and Jesse Wegman, and more.
  • Bush Center President and CEO Ken Hersh published “A survival guide for a moderate conservative” in The Dallas Morning News. He’ll continue to explore good citizenship habits that can help readers navigate this election year in The News over the next several weeks.
  • I also wrote an article on how recognizing opponents’ humanity captures the true meaning of civility. It shouldn't be a bad or cringe-worthy word.
  • Author Alexandra Hudson joined us on a recent episode of The Strategerist podcast to discuss the difference between civility and politeness, why civility is a duty of citizenship, and more.

Pluralism in the news
  • Free and fair press: A new organization, Rebuild Local News, advocates for nonpartisan public policies to increase the number of reporters covering our local institutions and facets of community life. The group's president, Steven Waldman, even argues that local investigative and watchdog reporting can save taxpayers money by exposing graft and corruption.
  • A confident pluralist: This Deseret News article lists five great tips Harvard public policy and political philosophy professor Danielle Allen shared on how to practice pluralism confidently at a recent BYU event.
  • Healthy conflict: Utah Governor Spencer Cox discussed the need for better disagreement in The Chronicle of Philanthropy. Cox also joined Maryland Governor Wes Moore in a video reminding us that the things that unite us as Americans are greater than those that divide us.
  • “We the Texans”: The Texas Tribune recently launched a “a yearlong effort focused on helping Texans better understand the people and processes that uphold our state’s democracy and how Texas institutions can more effectively work on behalf of the state’s residents.” My colleague Bill McKenzie joined a panel discussion at the launch event to discuss polarization in the country.
