A conversation with Governors
Spencer Cox (R-Utah) and
Laura Kelly (D-Kansas), moderated by
Krys Boyd of KERA.
Does this sound familiar?
You’ve gathered around the dinner table for a nice family meal. Everyone is enjoying the home cooking when someone mentions a recent news headline about a candidate for president. Someone else points out that the media is just out to get that candidate. The conversation quickly devolves into fighting, hurt feelings, and someone storming off angrily. Dinner is ruined. Again.
American democracy is built around the participation of its citizens. Not just in voting, but in disagreement, discourse, and the exchange of ideas in the pursuit of building a more perfect union. The Founding Fathers didn’t agree on every topic, and neither will we. And neither should we.
Disagreement doesn’t have to ruin the family dinner, though. As we charge toward the 2024 elections, this Engage at the Bush Center event presented by NexPoint will show us how standing up for firmly-held beliefs and passionate civil discourse is not only possible, but encouraged – as long as it is built atop a foundation of respect and understanding that our political opponents are not our enemies.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox, a Republican, and Kansas Governor Laura Kelly, a Democrat, will advance the lively and highly entertaining conversation Governor Cox recently began on the importance of “disagreeing better.” Don’t miss the program Governor Cox and Governor Kelly believe can save your family dinners.
