Afghanistan: Why We Can’t Look Away

October 18, 2021

Afghans need continued support as they face acute immigration and humanitarian challenges. Despite promises made in August, Taliban leaders have stripped back the gains made in women’s rights, education, health care, economic inclusion, and civic and social life. Left unchecked by the United States and the international community, the Taliban's brutality only stands to increase further. Meanwhile, the United States' broken immigration system does not adequately provide protection to at-risk Afghans.

In this virtual conversation and live Q&A, Bush Institute experts Natalie Gonnella-PlattsLaura Collins,  and Holly Kuzmich discuss the immigration issues and the dire circumstances women and children are encountering in Afghanistan. This exchange addresses the policy changes Congress and the administration should make and what the private sector and international community can do to protect Afghans’ rights.
