Constitutional Conversations: Justice Scalia’s Memorable Speeches & James Madison & Today’s Media

Event

February 6, 2018

As we begin 2018, the Bush Center gratefully welcomes Highland Capital Management as the presenting sponsor of our popular Engage series of public programs, now known as Engage at the Bush Center, presented by Highland Capital Management. We begin our 2018 slate of programs at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, February 5 with a special two-part program in collaboration with the National Constitution Center: Constitutional Conversations: Justice Scalia’s Memorable Speeches / James Madison & Today’s Media. This event is the first in what will become an annual Engage program under the “Transformations & Foundations” banner.

The evening will begin with a conversation with Christopher Scalia, son of late U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia and author of Scalia Speaks: Reflections on Law, Faith, and Life Well Lived. The book is a collection of his father’s favorite (and often humorous) speeches that was published in October 2017. The program will be moderated by Evan Young, a former clerk for Justice Scalia, and will include video clips from select speeches.

The second portion of the evening will feature a panel of experts discussing today’s media landscape and what First Amendment author James Madison might have thought of it. Participating will be Jeffrey Rosen, president and CEO of the National Constitution Center and an expert on Madison; Amy Mitchell, one of America’s preeminent media and social media researchers and co-author of the Pew Research Center’s annual “State of the News Media” report; and Dallas Morning News Editor Mike Wilson, who has deep experience in both traditional and digital media. The panel will be moderated by Amanda Schnetzer, George W. Bush Institute Director, Global Initiatives.
