Statement by President George W. Bush on John Hager

"The father of Henry, our son-in-law, was a great man and a great friend to our family."

KENNEBUNKPORT, MAINE — “Laura and I are saddened by the loss of John Hager. The father of Henry, our son-in-law, was a great man and a great friend to our family. After being stricken with polio at a young age and bound to a wheelchair, he was determined to make the most of his life. And he did. John became a successful business executive, and important member of my Administration, and the respected Lieutenant Governor of Virginia. He was active and joyful, a wonderful father, and a loving grandfather to his five grandchildren. Laura and I send our heartfelt condolences to John’s dear wife, Maggie, and to sons Jack and Henry and their families.”
