DALLAS, Texas

“We congratulate the people of Burma for making this step forward on the path to democracy with their national elections. The elections show that Burma’s history is moving in a hopeful direction.

“For decades, courageous individuals like Aung San Suu Kyi have been steadfast advocates for freedom in the country. Through the Bush Institute’s Liberty and Leadership Forum, we have met with many of Burma’s emerging young leaders, several of whom ran for elected office in this election. We are concerned about two young leaders, Phyoe Phyoe Aung and her husband Lin Htet Naing. They are in prison with other student leaders because they advocated for a transparent and accountable education system. The students’ cause is part of Burma’s transition, and they should be released. Burma’s democratic journey is far from over, and important tasks lie ahead to build the institutions that support democracy and secure the blessings of liberty for all in Burma.”
