The George W. Bush Institute today announced that Get Smart Schools (GSS) has become one of the first leadership development organizations in the country to partner with the George W. Bush Institute through its initiative, the Alliance to Reform Education Leadership (AREL), to ensure that school principals are properly recruited, trained and evaluated.

"Get Smart Schools is honored to be one of the first programs in the nation to partner with the George W. Bush Institute,” said Amy Slothower, Executive Director of Get Smart Schools. “We applaud the work that the Institute is doing to bring attention to the critical issue of school leadership and we are excited to work with them to help prepare the next generation of transformative school leaders.”

The Bush Institute launched AREL in 2010. AREL is the largest initiative in history to enhance the achievement of America’s children by improving the performance of America’s school principals. The initiative creates an innovative, nationwide network to transform the way school districts identify, recruit, prepare, empower, and evaluate their leaders. AREL convenes experts from the public and private sectors, as well as the military and academia, to apply proven leadership practices to the important job of educating our children and running effective schools.

“The Bush Institute is pleased to partner with Get Smart Schools on the common goal of equipping school principals to better lead our public schools,” said Kerri Briggs, director of education reform at the Bush Institute. “Our partnership with Get Smarts Schools is a prime example of the Bush Institute’s goal to share best practices and resources to offer innovative, forward-thinking programs that will change the game for public schools.”

GSS will serve as an innovative training site to improve principal training, create a more rigorous selection process of choosing principals, change the management context in which principals operate (more authority and access to data) and construct a national certification program for principals. By being one of the first partner organizations, GSS will also assist AREL in establishing a national set of standards and policy conditions for leadership success.
