Anne Wicks, the Bush Institute Ann Kimball Johnson Education Reform Initiative Director, explains what this year's STAAR Exam results mean for students, schools, and districts, and what can be done to help address the academic fallout from the pandemic.

Last week, the Texas Education Agency (TEA) released the 2021 STAAR Exam results. In this Two-Minute Take, Ann Wicks, the Bush Institute Ann Kimball Johnson Education Reform Initiative Director, explains what this year’s scores mean for students and what can be done moving forward to make up for the academic fallout from the pandemic. The data shows a wipeout of several years worth of progress for kids— there were significant drops in reading and math scores in third through eighth graders. Schools and districts should pay attention to recent bills focused on accelerated learning and resources. The TEA will be releasing materials this fall to help facilitate conversations between parents and teachers, with the goal of getting kids back on track.
