In Memoriam: Meral Adeeb

We are deeply saddened to report that Meral Adeeb, one of our 2013 Women’s Initiative Fellows, passed away last Tuesday morning in Cairo due to injuries sustained in a car accident.  Meral was sweet spirited, kind and passionate.  Over the course of the fellowship she quickly moved from Fellow to friend and a trusted confidant to those around her. Her hopes for Egypt and desire to help women and girls was both inspiring and infectious.

A 3-D Animator at Arascope Film Company in Egypt, Meral worked on a number of short movies for children that convey moral and ethical messages.  She published editorial cartoons in popular Egyptian magazines on topics including sexual harassment, Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and the wearing of the veil. Through such education, Meral helped advance women’s struggles for progress and equality.

Meral received her Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts from Helwan University in Cairo, majoring in Graphic Design and 2-D Animation.

Meral leaves behind a precious husband, Emad, and two wonderful children – a daughter, Glory (17) and son, Fady (14).  Please join her family, the Women’s Initiative team and the 2013 fellows in celebrating Meral’s incredible life and strong legacy that she leaves behind.  She will be dearly missed.
