The Vice Presidential debate gave the Republican candidate, Paul Ryan, an opportunity to elaborate the plans that Presidential candidate Mitt Romney and he have to address the problems of budget deficits and long-term debt.

Ryan put forth three general principles: “Don’t increase the deficit, don’t raise taxes on the middle class, and don’t lower the share paid by the upper class.” Invoking the successes of Ronald Reagan, Ryan emphasized the need to “lower rates and broaden the base.” He also praised Reagan’s ability to forge a bipartisan consensus in reforming the tax code.
