This piece by Elliott Abrams, who had the Mideast portfolio in the George W. Bush administration, has it exactly right. The old regimes could not last without reform — a condition that prevails still for many Arab nations (and a Persian one too). Rather than lament the appeal of Islamism, it's time for America to help to spread and reinforce the ideals of liberal democracy and freedom — and help build institutions of civil society.
