On December 5th and 6th, the George W. Bush Institute will convene representatives from nationally recognized principal preparation programs to improve aspiring principal residencies throughout the country. The convening will be led in collaboration with NYC Leadership Academy, one of 28 innovatively designed principal preparation programs that compose the Bush Institute’s AREL Network.
The last meeting in a series, the two-day convening will engage leaders in education to inform the Bush Institute’s upcoming Residency Design Initiative – a collaboration between the Bush Institute’s AREL and NYC Leadership Academy. The groundbreaking project will ultimately produce a report that provides models for principal preparation programs to design their aspiring principal residencies.
“Residency provides aspiring principals time to apply and refine the skills they’ve learned on a campus leadership team. This provides the opportunity to connect theory and classroom instruction with practice in an authentic setting,” said AREL Program Director Dr. Kerry Ann Moll. “Better defining the key components of a residency experience is critical to improving principal preparation across the country.”
Similar to the importance of medical residencies, a well-designed residency experience is critical to graduating school leaders capable of improving student achievement. This is especially important as expectations for principals, teachers and students continue to increase.
Because every child deserves an excellent principal, AREL shapes its ideas and actions around its mission of ensuring there is an effective principal, able to significantly advance student achievement, at the helm of every school. Preparation for aspiring principals, including the residency, is critical to this mission.
