Transitioning away from seat time, states are embracing competency-based education where students can progress regardless of time, place, or pace of learning. An-Me Chung has developed a project to convene stakeholders to design research, policies, and practices, including digital credentials that make cognitive and non-cognitive skills learned in out-of-school time count towards college and career-readiness. A design meeting with IDEO and Oregon local, state, and national stakeholders is planned for fall 2015 followed by implementation with pro-bono experts. This becomes a case study for states, and tests Design Labs as opportunities for organizations working in parallel to design and implement together for greater impact.
