In partnership with Goldman Sachs, the McCain Institute, and the Meridian International Center, the George W. Bush Institute is hosting a Women’s Leadership Delegation from Burma.  In honor of their visit, the Freedom Collection spotlights the bravery of countless Burmese dissidents working to free their country from tyranny.  Today we recognize the efforts of Cheery Zahau, a human rights activist from Chin State.  As a high school student, Zahau’s teachers warned that her intellectual curiosity would land her in serious trouble with the military junta.  She left Burma so that she could rally international support for protecting human dignity and expanding individual rights in her country. 

In her Freedom Collection interview, Zahau describes military abuses against the people of Chin State that include forced labor and rape, and the efforts of freedom advocates to resist the regime’s cruelty:
