The CEO of CKE Restaurants, Inc., Andrew F. Puzder, is also an author. With David Newton, he wrote “Job Creation: How It Really Works and Why Government Doesn’t Understand It,” which argues that businesses drive growth, while government retards it through taxes, regulations, and misguided attempts at redistribution that create uncertainty and discourage investment. Speaking at last week’s conference on immigration, sponsored by the 4% Growth Project and the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, Puzder highlighted the importance of immigrant employees in transforming his company’s restaurants, which include Carl’s Jr. and Hardee’s. He noted that CKE’s workforce in California, about 50% of which is Hispanic, is regarded as a “model” by the chains’ restaurants in other parts of the country.
