International sanctions levied against the regime for its dubious nuclear program have impacted the Iranian economy; inflation is out of control and the value of the Iranian rial has plummeted. On Wednesday, public outrage reached a breaking point as frustrated citizens took to the streets, calling for the resignation of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and denouncing his government’s support for Syria’s Bashar al-Assad instead of them. In Mohsen’s view, these protests may be the first spark in a chain reaction of public demonstrations against the regime’s economic policy.
