Here at the 4% Growth Project we have been working to change the national conversation to be centered on economic growth. One way to see if the “growth” theme is catching on is to check whether President Obama and Governor Romney mentioned economic growth in their first presidential debate. Reading the debate transcript, I find the word “grow” mentioned by the candidates a combined 25 times — 14 mentions by Romney and 11 by Obama. Each of the 25 references relate in some way to the economy (as opposed to the candidates saying something such as “When I was growing up…”). Several of the mentions were explicitly about economic growth itself, while others addressed small-business growth and job growth. Tax reform was one major policy theme that both candidates believed can contribute to stronger growth. Energy was another. These are both major areas of we have emphasized as well, and we’re glad to see they are getting serious thought. We’ll be following the remaining debates, including next week’s Vice Presidential face-off between Joe Biden and Paul Ryan. Check back often for more growth updates.
