Dallas, Texas (February 6, 2017) – Today, the George W. Bush Institute formally opened applications for the North Korea Freedom Scholarship Fund, designed to help North Korean escapees pursue higher education and build productive, prosperous lives as new Americans.

“Through our work with North Korean refugees in America, we have learned that they have adjusted well and want to contribute to our society,” said Holly Kuzmich, Executive Director of the Bush Institute. “They remind us why helping others escape oppression is in our best moral and national interest.”

In the last decade, several hundred North Koreans have risked everything to escape and reestablish themselves in the United States.  After conducting two studies of the community and its needs, the Bush Institute has worked with Korean-Americans and others to establish the scholarship fund.

“When we asked them about their dreams and goals, many spoke of their desire to improve themselves through education,” said Mrs. Laura Bush at the announcement of the scholarship last November. “At the Bush Center, we want to help these refugees on their path to success.”

Administered by Communities Foundation of Texas, these scholarships will support escapees in pursuing a range of educational opportunities, helping them to succeed and to build new lives in freedom. The application deadline is April 28, 2017.

The effort is part of the Bush Institute’s ongoing work to improve the human condition in North Korea.
