Vladimir Kara-Murza has been selected a winner of this year’s Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting. Kara-Murza is a prominent opposition leader currently serving a 25-year sentence on politically-motivated charges. He has been a steadfast supporter of a democratic Russia, an outspoken critic of Vladimir Putin’s unprovoked and brutal invasion of Ukraine, and an advocate for accountability for Putin’s human rights abuses.
His “passionate columns written at great personal risk from his prison cell” for the Washington Post were recognized by the Pulitzer committee.
The Bush Institute has profiled Kara-Murza in our Struggle for Freedom series and joined forces with other organizations advocating for his release. In failing health after surviving two poisonings, Kara-Murza is being held in inhumane conditions in Russia. The international community should redouble its efforts to secure his release and all those unjustly detained in Putin’s prison network.
